The Republic of Croatia is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. Ancient walled towns overlook sparkling blue seas littered with islands to explore. A recent surge in tourism thanks to the popular Game of Thrones TV show has put Croatia back on the tourist map and consequently driven up prices considerably.
With centuries of rich history Croatia offers a captivating blend of stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. Known for its dramatic coastline, ancient cities, and crystal-clear waters, Croatia is a destination that effortlessly balances the old with the new. Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is often the first stop for many, I only had a chance to pass quickly, instead exploring the cities of Split, Zadar, and Zagreb.
Split, with its impressive Diocletian’s Palace at the heart of the city, is a place where Roman history and modern life coexist harmoniously. The bustling Riva promenade, lined with cafes and palm trees, offers a perfect spot to soak in the Mediterranean atmosphere. Zadar, with its mix of Roman ruins, medieval churches, and innovative installations like the Sea Organ, is a city that surprises at every turn. The sunsets here, famously described by Alfred Hitchcock as the most beautiful in the world, are a daily spectacle that leaves a lasting impression.
Zagreb, the capital, presents a different side of Croatia—a lively and cosmopolitan city with a rich cultural scene. From the historic Upper Town with its cobblestone streets and Gothic architecture to the vibrant markets and street art of the Lower Town, Zagreb is a city that pulses with energy and creativity. Croatia’s diverse offerings, from the coastal charm of Split and Zadar to the urban vibrancy of Zagreb, make it a country that invites exploration and rewards with unforgettable experiences.
It’s a stunning country with so much on offer.. I passed through quickly but will definitely be back to spend more time!
